May Chang (litsea cubeba) is steam distilled and its strong lemony odour comes from its main constituent Citral 75%. The aroma likens to Lemongrass, though May Chang has a rounder more fruity aroma. Litsea citrata is a related species but with a lower citral content.
In Chinese medicine, May Chang is used to treat painful or difficult menstruation, indigestion, lower back pain, chills, headaches, travel sickness and muscle aches. In Aromatherapy, this is one of the oils (diluted in a carrier oil with other essential oils) which may be helpful for arrhythmia, high blood pressure, and stress related conditions.
Aromatherapy/Home Use example:
To revitalise and relieve stress, add 2 drops May Chang, 2 drops Rose Absolute, and 5 drops Mandarin in 300ml of water in a diffuser.
Safety: Do not use in massage or bath blends for those with sensitive or allergy-prone skin.
